Nestled in the hills north of Montalcino, in the heart of the renowned Brunello di Montalcino wine region, CASTELLO TRICERCHI is a unique wine estate that blends historical nobility with modern craftsmanship. Construction of the castle began in the 13th century under the Altesi family and was completed in 1441 by the Tricerchi family; the structure stands along the Via Francigena. Its rich architecture, medieval fortifications, and a chapel housing a fragment of the Virgin Mary’s veil earned it protected status as part of Italy’s historical and artistic heritage in 1982.
Today, the estate is managed by Tommaso and Emanuele Squarcia, direct descendants of the Tricerchi family and representatives of the 17th generation. The Squarcia family inherited the castle in the 19th century through Maddalena (known as Nena) and her son Giulio (Iulio) Squarcia, who now heads the operation.
The property spans approximately 400 hectares, with 13 hectares of vineyards dedicated exclusively to Sangiovese Grosso, distributed across seven distinct plots surrounding the castle. The terroir—characterized by clay-limestone and sandy soils—benefits from a northwest-to-north exposure and significant diurnal temperature variations, which foster elegance and finesse in the wines. CASTELLO TRICERCHI’s winemaking is defined by a traditional approach: hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, extended maceration, and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The result? Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino wines that are both elegant and intense, offering excellent value for money.
