Located in the heart of Chianti, in Castellina in Chianti, CASTAGNOLI is an estate with a history dating back to 998. Since 2005, the Schefenacker family—winemakers for three generations—has been dedicated to preserving this heritage while bringing a new dimension to the estate's wines.
The 11 hectares of vineyards, farmed organically for over 50 years, are spread across 19 plots situated on ancient dry-stone terraces. Today, more than six kilometers of historic terraces define the estate's landscape. Vigna Salita, the estate’s Grand Cru, stands as its most emblematic expression: its vines—trained using the *alberello* method, an ancient Tuscan technique where the plants grow as small, bush-like vines—face south and southwest and span an elevation change of over 50 meters. Here, Sangiovese lies at the very heart of Castagnoli’s philosophy. Each plot is cultivated, harvested, and vinified separately to reveal the nuances of its specific terroir. This diversity of soils, altitudes, and microclimates allows Castagnoli to showcase the full finesse, freshness, and complexity of Sangiovese, plot by plot.
Castagnoli is thus far more than just a wine estate: it is a living landscape, shaped by centuries of history and meticulous viticulture, where the tradition of ancient terraces meets a contemporary vision of winemaking.
